USDT on TRON is fast and cheap — which is exactly why scammers love it. Below are the nine most common TRC20 scam schemes and the checks that stop them.
1. Multisig wallet trap
A "leaked" seed phrase with real USDT you cannot move; you lose the TRX you send for fees. Full guide.
2. Fake USDT token
A TRC20 token named USDT with a different contract. Check that the contract is TR7NHqjeKQxGTCi8q8ZY4pL8otSzgjLj6t on Tronscan.
3. Address poisoning
Scammers send 0 USDT or dust from an address whose first and last characters match yours. You copy it from history and send real funds to the scammer. Always validate the full address.
4. Fake TXID / payment screenshot
"Payment sent, here is the hash." The hash is invented or belongs to another transaction. Check the TRC20 hash yourself.
5. Pig butchering / fake investment platforms
A friendly stranger convinces you to deposit USDT into a "trading platform" that shows fake profits. Withdrawals require more "taxes". Run an AML check on the deposit address — these clusters are labelled fast by TRM and Chainalysis.
6. Unlimited approval drain
A dApp or airdrop asks to "approve USDT". You grant unlimited allowance; the contract drains your wallet later. Review approvals in TronLink and revoke unknown ones.
7. Fake exchange / P2P buyer paying with dirty USDT
You sell goods for USDT that came from a hack. The exchange freezes your account on deposit. AML check before accepting prevents this.
8. "Tronscan support" phishing
Fake support asks for your seed phrase to "unfreeze" funds. Real Tronscan never asks. Is Tronscan legit? Yes — but only at tronscan.org.
9. Energy rental / fee-saving scams
Sites promise cheap energy but require you to sign a transaction that changes your account permissions. Read every signing prompt.
The 60-second safety checklist
- Validate the address format.
- Check the address on Tronscan: age, permissions, blacklist label.
- Verify the token contract.
- Run a Tron AML check on the counterparty.
- Verify any TXID yourself. Never trust screenshots.
